Canada offers visitors a unique collection of natural wonders that never cease to amaze. Its wilderness attracts many seeking to get off the beaten track and contemplate the marvels of creation.
The Rockies, Nahanni National Park Reserve and the Bay of Fundy are just a few of the magnificent sites to behold. For those heading west to the Rockies, then there is a special scared place that is believed to contain healing powers and that offers some of the most beautiful wild landscapes in the country. Spirit island is the world's most famous isle that is off bounds to all people except an indigenous Indian tribe, known as the Stoney Nakoda.
Located on Maligne Lake 14 kilometres from the nearest road or hiking trail, and 49 kilometres from the closest town, this far-flung landmark has become one of the most iconic sites in Canada.
It has featured in American films and TV shows, and has been used by Apple to to showcase the camera quality of its new iPads
The island is really just a tiny grove of trees and pristine nature that is small enough to cross in just a few steps and is separated from the mainland by an isthmus.
It becomes a true island on Maligne lake for a few short days during the summer.
Spirit Island is set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain peaks and glaciers circling the south end of Maligne Lake. But tourists can only view the island from boats and are not allowed to explore its territory on foot.
The only people with the legal right to do so are the Stoney Nakoda - the original "peoples of the mountains".
They believe the island possesses healing powers hanks to its unique position bridging land and water and ringed by mountains on three sides.
Barry Wesley, a Stoney knowledge keeper and language protector. Told the BBC: "For thousands of years, we would go to Spirit Island to conduct healing ceremonies, but when Jasper [park] was created back in 1907, we were forced out.
"The Creator gave us a responsibility to look after this land and this island, and now we are finally reconnecting with it again."
