A 'truly masterful' period drama that slipped under the radar is now available for free on ITVX. The Confessions of Frannie Langton, adapted from the award-winning novel by Sara Collins, first graced our screens on ITV in 2022. The plot centres around young Jamaican maid Frannie, who finds herself accused of murdering her employers during the night.
"Dragged away to prison, Frannie attempts to piece together the events of that night. She is deep into a laudanum addiction and unclear about precisely what happened," the synopsis reveals.
Made up of only four episodes, this limited drama delves into everything from systemic racism in the Georgian era to forbidden love, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Karla-Simone Spence (Blue Story) takes the lead as Frannie, with Kingsman star Sophie Cookson playing her Madame.
Also featuring in the limited series are Patrick Martins (Northern Lights), Stephen Campbell Moore (Little Disasters) and BAFTA nominee Steven Mackintosh.
While the show hasn't achieved the same level of popularity as Bridgerton, those who did tune in were thoroughly impressed.
It secured an outstanding 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 10 critical reviews and a commendable 67% from audiences.
One fan recounted how they discovered the show, writing: "I actually put it on as background noise and because I like period dramas, within 30 minutes I was GRIPPED. Watched in one sitting."
One viewer gushed on IMDb: "This is a haunting tale. It will stay with you long after you have finished the last episode.
"There are so many quotable moments and some truly masterful performances. A highly recommended watch!"
Meanwhile, another fan penned: "I just finished watching this series and I'm struck by how underrated it seems to be.
"I mean, considering how entertaining it is and the strong positive social commentaries that it makes coupled with its decent visual appeal, one cannot help but wonder how so many people seem to not yet have watched it."
And another suggested: "One to binge and enjoy if you like the genre."
