Oliver Glasner in agreement with Mikel Arteta over Premier League fixture chaos

Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Crystal Palace have requested the Premier League to reschedule their December fixture against Leeds United in an attempt to ease their packed schedule.

The Eagles' Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Arsenal is set for December 23, marking one of eight matches for Palace in December, including a visit to the Emirates Stadium just two days after their scheduled trip to Elland Road.

Arsenal's boss Mikel Arteta is also grappling with a similar tight schedule and hinted on Monday that the Gunners will aim to have their own match against Everton on 21st December moved, presumably to a day earlier.

"We're trying the same thing that Arsenal is," Glasner stated. "We're trying to move the Leeds game forward to Saturday, so that we have two days between these games. Let's see.

"We didn't get a response (yet) from the Premier League, just to have the same situation as Arsenal, if their game is moved."

Originally, the Carabao Cup tie was slated for December 16, but this would have resulted in Palace playing four matches within eight days. Now, both teams are poised to play two matches in three days unless their requests are approved. The PA news agency has reached out to the Premier League for a comment.

Glasner further commented: "I think I'm always talking about making mistakes as part of development, and I think that the EFL and Premier League didn't solve this problem before the start of the season.

"They will learn from it, and I am pretty sure they will have the solution before the start of the season. Maybe they needed this experience to solve it and not to rely that this won't happen. Again, we will be ready, whatever, however the fixture is."

When PA approached the EFL for a response, the governing body referred to an earlier statement which emphasised the additional fixtures in European tournaments as a crucial element in this scheduling conflict.

An EFL statement declared: "The expansion of European cup competitions and number of exclusive match nights across Europe ahead of the 2024/25 season, implemented without adequate consultation with domestic leagues, means that such scheduling conflicts – for both the EFL Cup and other competitions – are now entirely unavoidable."

Palace welcome AZ Alkmaar in their third Conference League encounter, a fixture that could prove pivotal to their hopes of securing a top-eight finish in the group and claiming an automatic place in the last 16.

The Eagles began their European campaign with a 2-0 triumph at Dynamo Kyiv before enduring a frustrating 1-0 reverse to Cypriot outfit AEK Larnaca.

Glasner will have Adam Wharton available once more, though disclosed the England midfielder was not "100 per cent" owing to illness.

Chadi Riad will feature in the matchday squad but is unlikely to start. The Moroccan centre-back is recovering from a lengthy anterior cruciate ligament-related injury layoff, and has managed just three outings for the Eagles since arriving last summer.
